While technically a non-medicated gel, it includes aloe vera, shea butter, coconut and almond oils, all used for their skin healing properties in dermatology as well as the cosmetic industry. Water and xanthan gum combine to make it viscous. You may note the use of strong acids in the formula but these are parts of a recipe for an additive to lower the pH making it more skin friendly. Further, the labeling states the pH optimized solution, theoretically, has some healing benefit. The gel has a very faint smell but one would consider it odorless -- a human at least.
Immediately, your feline friend should sense a soothing effect from the coolness of the gel which in itself should curtail some of the excessive grooming and/or scratching. Applied liberally, it will subsequently keep the affected area moist and protected. Basically, stop the itch to stop the scratch -- no different than humans. With any first aid care, cuts should first be cleansed and blotted dry but sometimes they get that persistent itch that, if left to the cat's own vices, will only materialize into something worse. The company has a similar product for canines but the bottle label states "safe for all furry pets" so it's likely the same formula is simply marketed differently.
